The IO Orchestra is the musical component of Caeser Pink's multimedia productions. The ensemble usually consists of 10 to 15 performers. Caeser describes the musical style as "Anything Goes." Pink explains his musical philosophy, "Genres are prisons used to limit the scope of an artist's work. They exist mainly for the purpose of marketing and business. My goal is to allow myself complete creative freedom to mix and match any style, any idea, to follow my curiosity and imagination, and hopefully explore new territory in the process. It is vital to ignore business concerns, and to some extent, the comfort of the audience."
The ensemble works in a form that used to be called 'a revue'. Their live performances are a celebration of the uniqueness of the individuals. Although the overall musical concepts are guided by Caeser's artistic vision, different performers take turns in the spotlight, each of whom bring their own personalities to the music. Whether in concert or on a recording, the individual musical pieces serve the larger structure of the work.
All of these approaches can be heard on recordings "A Whole New Way Of Makin' It Happen!" A mind expanding concept album that mixes rock, funk, jazz, trip-hop, ambient soundscapes, spoken word poetry, and sound effects to create a social-political statement on American culture. Caeser often uses humor and satire to comment on issues such as prescription drug addiction, racism and bigotry, class struggles, the dumbing-down of the public by corporate media, and our history as a nation of immigrants.
The album features lead vocals solos by Jody Leylac (Tropic Of Capricorn), Talia Wright (Everyday People), Amy Grace (America, where are you?), and spoken word by Heather Milburn (Martin Luther King). The album also features guest appearances by guitar virtuoso Reeves Gabrels (The Cure, Tin Machine, David Bowie), and renowned avant garde pianist Mike Garson (David Bowie, NIN, No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins).
"One of my musical goals is to inspire people to question the values of our society, and reflect on their own beliefs and values," Pink explains. "This can have both a conscious and subconscious effect. Consciously it is done with lyrics and performance, but it can also be done by providing a musical experience that is beyond their understanding or expectations. Some will recoil, some will become angry, but for others it may be a moment of revelation."
Journalist Michael Jenkins spoke of this in his review of the album 'Four Legs Good, Two Legs Baaad!' for the Wisconsin Wistonion, "Caeser Pink is unlike any musical phenomenon one could find. If Bob Dylan had started writing songs in this era, this is what he'd have written. The truly original lyrical performance is brilliant; the words are not just lyrics to a song, but pure poetry. They are not just heard or read, they are felt and experienced. No one walks away untouched. This band does not just make music, they do not just make records; they create art. The artist's goal is not to make friends, but to make thinkers."
In performance Caeser attempts to create an spirit of luminosity in which the audience becomes one with the performers and other audience members. Losing themselves. and sometimes their inhibitions, in the moment they are experiencing. The following press quotes attest to this uniqueness of that experience:
