"Film is the most complex of the artistic mediums. It engages sight, sound, and intellect. The language of film was created in the early years of filmmaking, and we as viewers have been trained to understand that language. It is also a language that has the potential to change and evolve.
As filmmakers the challenge of attempting to create new film language is that we have been conditioned to understand film only within the language already created. We need to unlearn the previous language, to forget all that we already know, in order to think about the language from a fresh perspective. It requires going back in time to the most primitive understanding of what the medium can do, and how meaning can be constructed from it." - Caeser Pink
Caeser Pink's experimental works fall into a few distinct categories. Many are created for use as video projection within his multimedia performances. These are designed to add another layer of meaning to the music and performance being presented live on stage.
Another group are part of a series titled "Meditations." Within this category are subgroups such as the series "Temple Paintings" and "Ecumenicals." Inspired by Andy Warhol's earliest 16mm films, the films are motion paintings, they are in reduced motion, often black & white, and usually focused on something simple such as a woman dancing.
The power of these films comes from the subtle emotions on the human face, the beauty of the body, or the ambience of the mise en scène. To actively watch the films requires a slowing down of the minds and an opening up of the senses. The title "Meditations" refers to the similarity to yoga, prayer, and contemplative reflection.
A third category of experimental films are those created as stand alone works. It should also be mentioned that an experimental approach can be brought to traditional forms such as documentaries, narratives, and especially music videos. For example, see Pink's documentary Heart Beats Fire (see documentary page) which brings a musical techniques and structures to documentary style.
